National Merit finalists are Wayne Melander and Roger Stoltz. A vague impression of boring meetings usually enters one's mind when he thinks of Boys ' State or Girls' State. Just what does happen at Boys' and Girls' State? Each summer Boys' and Girls ' Staters are chosen from the junior classes of schools throughout South Dakota. The staters spend a week on a South Dakota college campus learning about and actually participating in South Dakota government. During the week the staters organize governments on the city, county, and state levels. Besides gaining practical knowledge of governmental functions, the staters also had a lot of fun. For example, every stater made a host of new friends, who usually turned out to be loads of fun. Staters agree that much was learned, but also much was done- just for fun! Accomplishments Credit to WHS Boys' and Girls' State representatives are, first row: Barbara Lenz, Patty McCullough, and Kathy Larson. Second row: Roger Stoltz, Gary Guen- ther, Russell Price, and Jerry Bergan. Third row: Steve Ries, Wayne Melander, Frank Tangren, and Howard Warriner.
