Arrows Mount the ESD Throne The 1961 Arro-w football team had two special ingredients in winning their second ESD crown in three years. According to Head Coach John DeWitt, working as a team and always possessing a strong desire to win were the two ingredients that carried the team to a victorious season. The Arrows stopped Montevideo 34-19 in the season's premiere. Five men hit the scoring column for the Arrows. Roger Liudahl, Tom Haggar, and Phil Lokke contributed one touch- down apiece, while veteran quarterback Doug Stonebarger added two, and Don Badenoch booted four extra points. By pounding out an 18-0 win, Fargo-Shanley held the Arrows in check. Fargo's fullback Ron Mische reeled off I I I yards in 21 carries for an impressive 5.3 yard average. Next on the Arrow agenda were the Yankton Bucks. The Arrows scored early and late in the game to down the. Bucks 13-0. Quarterback Doug Stonebarger had a "hot" evening as he completed I 0 out of 12 passes for I 08 yards. On the first road trip of the season, the Arrows traveled to Rapid City where they foiled the Cobblers with a 12-6 victory. Roger Liudahl scampered around the right end for the TD in the third period, and in the last period Raphael Mack caught a ten yard pass from Stonebarger to offset the lone Cobbler score. 94 The annual Ki-Yi game found the Arrows fly- ing past the Mitchell Kernels 39-7. A balanced attack paced the Arrows as three touchdowns came by land and three by air. The Brookings Bobcats w~re the only ESD team to have a halftime edge on the Arrows (14-13). However, an impressive second half carried the flaming Arrows past the Bobcats to the final score of 3 1-14. The lowly Madison Bulldogs almost broke the Arrow bubble as the Arrows slipped past them 20-12. The Arrows were outplayed in every- thing except the scoring department, which, in this case, was enough. After the Madison scare the Arrows bounced back strongly as they waxed the Huron Tigers 40-13. The first quarter removed all doubts as to the outcome of this game. In the final game of the season, the Arrows dumped the Aberdeen eleven 40-20. One of the most exciting plays of the season came just before the half of this game. Quarterback Tom Haggar handed the ball to Jerry Snow who then completed a 35 yard pass to Bob Bleck to give the Arrows a narrow 21-13 margin. Roger Liudahl scored three times, while lineman Russ Price scored a touchdown when he recovered an Eagle fumble in the end zone. Although the Arrows were definitely a dark horse at the season's start, their two important ingredients of desire and working together car- ried them through to clinch the ESD crown.
