FANCY FIGURING Mu Alpha Theta was an organi– zation comprised of dedicated mathema– ticians. Members proved their committment to this pilar of acadamia by making sacrifices twice a month to attend early morning meetings. Nor– mally, Mrs. Tyree prepared some sort of interesting activity, like decoding or 3-D tic-tac-toe, to delve into the more com– plicated aspects of equations. However, the rewards of being a member were not merely limited to an extension of one's knowledge. Members had several op– portunities to tutor younger, aspiring rnatheticians. During the course of the year Franklin's chapter of Mu Alpha Theta hosted a math contest for middle schools in Williamson County. Mu Al– phaTheta members ran the whole show. Stacy Carmichael, president, said, "Mu Alpha Theta is for all nerds, not justmath heads. I'm not taking a math class this year and I'm the president! You join for the prestige, but you stay for the people. Oh, and the free food at the math con– tests." Cleary, there was enough fun to around. Roll Call. Rolling down the highway on the way to a math conte t, Mrs. McMillan calls out the name of each student making sure that they did not leave anyone behind. 112 Organizations Mu Alpha Theta Top Dog.
