Accompanied by train horns, foghorns, ferry blasts and the sound of moving water, there is always solitude at the beach during some part of the day where listening takes the place of conversation. Yet there is usually someone to be found - - on hot summer days crowds of people seek the sun's rays or at other times the beachcombers and star-watchers stroll quietly at the water's edge.
