W. McNamara

Captain McNamara, the son of William F. and Molly (Quigley)

McNamara, was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on November 26, 1926.

He is a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy and Lehigh

University. Following graduation from the academy in June 1948, he was

commissioned an Ensign and reported aboard

USS HENRICO (APA-45)

for

duty. Subsequent assignments included Navigator in

USS MONTROSE

(APA-212),

Executive Officer in

USS ENERGY (MS0-438)

and Operations

Officer in

USS FLOYD B. PARKS (DD-884).

In November 1959, Captain McNamara reported to the Bureau of Naval

Personnel where he served initially as a Placement Officer and then as Ad–

ministrative Assistant to the Assistant Chief for Personnel Control. Detached

in July 1961, he reported to

USS JOHN PAUL JONES (DD-932)

for duty as

Executive Officer. Captain McNamara returned to the Naval War College in

August 1964, for duty on the staff in the War Gaming Department and later

as an Aide to the President.

From July 1966 to April 1968, he commanded

USS ROBISON (DDG-

12).

During his tour, the ship received the Meritorious Unit Commendation

and the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Meritorious Citation(Gallantry

Cross). He next served on the staff, Commander Cruiser-Destroyer Force,

U.S. Pacific Fleet, as Training and Readiness Officer and for two months as

Assistant Chief of Staff for Plans and Operations. In September 1970, he

became Executive Assistant and Senior Aide to the Chief of Naval Material,

from which assignment he reported to )the

USS CHICAGO.

Among Captain McNamara's decorations are the Legion of Merit with

Combat Distinguishing Device and Gold Star in lieu of second award, the

Bronze Star with Combat Distinguishing Device, the Meritorious Service

Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Meritorious Unit Commendation and

numerous campaign and theatre ribbons.

Captain McNamara is married to the former Claire C. Carr of Wilkes–

Barre, Pennsylvania. They and their seven children, Sharon, William, Daniel,

Joseph, Thomas, Robert and Patrick reside in San Diego, California.
