Ellen.
"Oh, sure." Lillian grows enthusiastic.
"Why, it's made up entirely of '39'ers. There's

that is helping the firemen quench
the flames a well as wetting us to the bone.
Donald Pickering, Bruce Flahertv ant!
Gregory Gianakouros stand shivering ·in the
wet, their collars turned up and their hat,;
pulled over their eyes.
As we walk nearer, Gr gory is speaking.
"I've seen so many of our old friends at
this fire. I wonder how it happens that thev'r
all back in Endicott at th , ame lim !"
·
" Iaybe they had a premonition that then•
was going to be a beautiful fire in the high
school!" Bruce ventures.
"Nonsense!" exclaims Don. "What makes
you think of such silly things?" And you
call this fire beautiful! Think of the mo11cv
thi fire is co ling the , chool taxpayers!" ·
" faybe it is expensive. But it's beautiful
11evertheles .
"Look, let's stop this quabbling, even if
it is in fun," interrupt Don. "Listen! Do
you hear a familiar voice?"
"Sounds like our belo\·ed president's. There
he is!" and Bruce point his finger over the
heads of the crowd.
"Clas of '39! Where are you?"
"It'
John Kva ny!" And ·Ralph Warner'.
with him!" exclaims Gregory.
"Pauline Tra too!"
..The voice ..comes more clearly through the

If
you graduated from U-E in
June, 1939, be at the American Leg-ion Club
House at seven tomorrow morning" The voic
grows faint r as the own r move on through
the crowd to attract more atl ntion from other
'39'ers.
Jt is a reunion! The entire class of '39, bv
some touch of a magic wand, were in towi1
this m morable
w
ek-end. What.'. more, they
were all at the fire watching th se flames
att mpt to destt·oy their alma mater.
Even tho' the flames might have entirely
de troyed all traces of the school, in the mem–
ory of every alumnu , there would have
remained forever not a picture of a brick
building but a structure of past immortal
dreams, hopes and fears.
