The Two Faces
of
Mankind
In the twentieth century Man-The-Machine
has gained increasing prominence. At birth
the infant is a statistic. At school, too often,
he is treated as a data machine whose circuits
must output correct responses. The human
computer who demonstrates a high efficiency
is likely to climb the economic "ladder of
success" after graduation. Our industrial soc–
iety demands we accept, to a degree, this pro–
file - this .face of Man-The- Computer.
It is vital that we do not succumb to the
idea that Man-The-Computer is the only face
14
of man. The vibrant spirit within man is the
second profile - the other face of man. This
is the face that smiles, that cries from the
depth of sorrow, that dares to ignore the odds
and survive a Valley Forge. This is the face
offamily, of friendship, of campassion fo·r the
sickandthe helpless. This is the face of man
which uplifts and enobles life.
As you move from school into the wider
world, do not permit the machine to possess
you. Keep your spirits high and nurture the
face that smiles.
Sincerely,
Edward A. Adamo
