There have been but four times in eighteen years that
the YHS Mermen failed to retain their city title. With
Roosevelt the city's strongest contender, and with this
year's typically hard luck, the swimmers finished the sea–
son a disappointing, but still optimistic second.
Outstanding performances by Wayne Koppe (in the 50
yard free tyle), Joe Morgan (in diving), Steve Schrier (in
the 200 and 400 free tyle events), and Billy Kulka (in the
200 yard medly and backstroke) highlighted the competi–
tive season. One could undoubtedly say that with return–
ing sophomores and juniors and the experienced coach–
ing of Carl Danielson, the Yonkers High School Mermen
will return with a better than average chance of regaining
the city championship.
