SOCCER
The 1981 Spartan Soccer Team entered their season with high
expectations. A very beneficial conditioning program showed
that the Spartans had much talent. Along with the returning
seniors and junior. the team consisted of two exchange stu–
dents - Martin Krahl from West Germany and Gary Flowerdew
from South Africa - and five sophomores. However, the Spar–
tans' high hopes fell short as they lost three of their first four
games. Changes were necessary. After switching Gary Flower–
dew to goal ie the Spartans were victorious aga inst the very
aggressive Panthers of Elder and continued this streak through–
out the next seven games. The Spartans finished the season
with a 6-6-1 GCL record that earned them a second place tie
with LaSalle.
