After a mediocre pre-season, Viewmont's
mighty Vikings came to the form that
has carried them to State six previous
years and easily won the Region Two
crown. Kim Nelson, Mike Oman, Roger
Thomas, Guy Morrell, Rusty McNeill, Ryan
Farnes, Sharm Smoot, Bruce Lee, and Chuck
Kruger starred for the the Vikes in
claiming a 9- 1 season record. By
swishing baskets from the outside,
working the ball in for a turn -around
jump shot, running the fast break and
hitting crucial foul shots, Viewmont
outclassed their Region Two foes.
From there, Viewmont went into the
State Playoffs ranked number five in
the state and faced the Hillcrest
Huskies. The first half was all
Viewmont as we rolled to a 31-23
lead at half. But a turnaround of
events enabled Hillcrest to pull ahead
in the final quarter winning 69-50 .
This was to be our last defeat.
Our determined team got by Bonneville
66-65, put down Olympus 65-64, and
held on for a big win over Skyline
in the Consolation Championship
game 66-61 in overtime. So as
predicted before the playoffs started,
Viewmont placed fifth in State and
ended their season 12 wins and 2 losses,
taking home with them their fifth
place trophy. Then two days later
it was announced that the Viking
studentbody nabbed the sportsmanship
trophy showing the pride of Viewmont
High School.
