Left-handed people learn to
in predominately right-hand
manage
society
Almost a century ago, a
left-handed baseball pitcher
was the first person to be
dubbed as a " south paw."
That term remains as a
description for the
"left-handed" person.
While being left-handed is
not a disabling handicap, it
does have disadvantages for
the person reared in a world
for the right-handed majority.
For instance, notebooks and
textbooks are placed on the
desk and the student goes to
the pencil sharpener. He
glances down at his watch
and decides he has enough
time to go for a drink of

water at the water fountain.
After class, he goes to his
locker to put away his books
and then goes to the cafeteria
where he gets his plate, milk,
and eating utensils.
After school he places the
car keys in the ignition and
heads for work where he
stands before a cash register
in the checkout stand.
Textbooks, notebooks, some
desks, pencil sharpeners,
watches, water fountains,
lockers, cafeteria trays, car
ignition, and cash registeres
are among the common items
which can give difficulty to
the left-handed person as this
"south paw" must orient
himself to be proficient with
both hands.
What is even more
uncomfortable, however, to the
left-handed person, is to be
sitting to the right of a
right-handed person at the
banquet table. There's just
never enough room.
Some manufacturers have
realized the complexity of the
left-handers plight and have
made efforts to lessen their
problems. Scissors, notebooks,
and baseball gloves are among
the items which are
manufactured for the
left-handed minority.
