In a three-week

anti-shoplifting campaign,

members of the Distributive

Education Clubs of America

(DECAl compiled facts and

figures to join with other

groups in an effort to reduce

shoplifting in louisiana.

DECA members conducted

an attitudinal survey at WMHS

and at junior highs, manned

the peepholes at local stores,

posed as security shoppers,

and collected material

pertaining to shoplifting.

Under the instruction of

Mrs. Mary Coleman and Mr.

Charles Jackson, some 65

students from DECA were

involved in the local

anti-shoplifting campaign.

' 'Students who conducted

the survey found that most

teenagers thought shoplifting

was a game-a joke, and

that while most teenagers

believe shoplifting is a crime,

most don't see anything really

wrong with it," Jackson

noted.

Of

those surveyed, 977 said

they had shoplifted; 476 had

shoplifted by themselves; 161

had been apprehended; and

171 of those admitting to

shoplifting had planned the

event ahead of time.

"Students in this survey

ranged in age from 10 to 18,

with the majority of those

who had shoplifted in the 15

to 17 age group," Jackson

said.

More people are getting

caught todat than ever before

because stores are more in

tune to the problem and are

using more detection devices.

"The best defense against

shoplifting is still an alert

employee," he noted.
