Bulldogs Do It Again
-
They Try Harder/ But
Stumble Through 2nd Winless Season.
Football, in its 100th year, might
have
been alive and kicking for the
big leagues, but for YHS it was another fatality. The Bulldogs ended
the 1969 season losing all games, but one, in which they tied.
It all started at Lakeland, where a thin, but enthusiastic crowd
gathered in anticipation to see what the Bulldog could do under
the coaching of Angelo lanello. Sure enough, that fir t game against
the powerful Lakeland Hornets wa encouraging. A touchdown and
then a two-point conversion scored more points for YHS in ten
minute than was scored in the whole of the football season of last
year.
The three games against other outsiders, Riverdale, Mamaroneck,
and john Jay, brought more or less expected results. Yonkers
gave
up 34 points to Riverdale, 35 points to Mamaroneck, and 32 points
to John Jay while scoring only 6 of its own in the three games
Games against Roosevelt and Lincoln were also greatly uneventful.
With reality stronger than hope and optimism, the Bulldogs got
#%
&•ed by the Roosevelt Indians 34-0. The Bulldogs proved to be ju t
a little bit more (not much more) of a match for Lincoln, losing
20-8.
Yonk rs' be t chanc for a victory this year came again t
Saunders-Commerce. With the score 14-14 and half the 4th quarter
left to play, the Bulldogs mi ed a f w opportunit1 to core again
and the game remained a tie.
With the rest of the 1969 football eason past history, Thanksgiving
Day came with a surpnsing atmosphere of good old-fashioned
spirit. In this traditional Gorton game, Yonkers responded to the
overwhelmingly packed bleachers with a sincere, concerted effort.
Local bookies established the Bulldogs as 30 point underdogs
before the game. But Yonkers covered the spread and
gave
the fans
their money'sworth. With excellent offense and defense Yonkers
only lost 22-12 to a team which won their last six game and beat
Yonker Ia t year 52-0.
Although the general picture was dreary, football 1969 showed a
great deal of improvement. It was a trial year for the new coaching
staff and rookie players, most of which will be back next year.
