DEDICATION
MR. ELDON SCHNELLER
Mr. Schneller joined the English department in 1926, and was appointed its chairman in
1956. During his tenure at Washington, his extracurricular activites included, among others, the
honor awards committee, the commencement committee, directorship of the June classes, and
the Yearbook. His retirement in June, 1966, ended forty years of devoted service to Washington
High School.
The thousands of students who recall him as a teacher remember his enthusiasm for the
subject and his ability to instill a lasting appreciation for American and English literature.
Because he was a firm believer in progress, both in and out of the classroom, he kept abreast
of the latest trends in education, and adapted his course material to the needs of his students.
The same enthusiasm was carried over into the Yearbook. His firm conviction that a year–
book should be a record of the school's activities resulted in a comprehensive coverage of high
school life. Under his guidance the book became not only a volume of happy memories but
also a resource book of student activities. While his active participation as director ended when
he was appointed chairman of the English department, he remained the faculty mentor of the
Boys' Sports section and the Seniors section. His lively interest prompted every yearbook staff
to work for excellence and accuracy in each year's issue.
One of the activities closest to Mr. Schneller's heart was his directorship of the June gradu–
ating classes. The same dedication he displayed in his classroom and on the yearbook was ex–
pended toward the graduates' activities. He took personal pride in watching each class's leaders
grow in leadership and responsibility. Each class became a personal friend of his. Their prob–
lems became his and their rewards were his rewards.
