"Get your§!?@! in gear- move that ball!
Come on, you pansies- what are
we
play–
ing, powder ball??!" Emotions working up,
not once, but every week of the season -
Learning to eat, drink and sleep football–
Then hours and hours of conditioning and
training, for that final moment- The thing
that makes it all worthwhile-The "before–
game-stomach-upset'·- The "during-game–
blues"- The "after-game-exultation" ...
and occasionally ... The "after-game-de–
pression' '- A humble and sincere prayer
offered by a team united in a single thought
-WIN!! A coach full of hopes and anxieties
-A half-time, full of cursing, rationalizing,
justifying, encouraging- Weeks of prep–
arations- Sizing up the opponents–
Running onto the field -The heart-warming
experience of hearing your school behind
you, 200%- Running off the field bruised
and muddy yet ecstatically victorious–
Filling a red-carpeted room with pride, unity,
spirit ... and baby powder- Treating
themselves, after a victory, to a "Mr.
Bubbles " shower- Sometimes using a
whole box, with a bar of gardenia-scented
soap between them- Sweat, tears, and
occasionally blood, made the men of the
famous Viking team.
