Jeans and tops

remain favorites

Brighter hues, straighter

skirts, and shorter jackets

tended to replace the disco

look of silvery, shimmery

blouses and tops. Velour,

courduroy, and cotton were

popular fabrics for tops in all

seasons. Jeans, whether plain

or fancy, faded or bright,

remained a fashion essential,

but famous names on back

pockets even tripled the

regular price.

28/Student Life

No snow means

school goes on

Unseasonably warm January

temperatures left many

students feeling cheated, since

no snow nor icy conditions

caused school to close. In the

last week of January,

however, temperature dipped

below freezing for several days

and caused ice to form

overnight. But by midmorning,

all vestiges of the frozen stuff

had melted, and students

resumed the hope that yet

another day might, just might,

bring a free day out of school.

Guest speakers

spark interest

for students

How could the teacher

provide information in such a

way as to interest, challenge,

or stimulate the students7

Speakers often provided the

spark to generate that interest.

In the physical education

department, speakers discussed

with the girls defenses against

rape, the use of drugs, and

use of CPR . Guest speakers in

speech provided instruction on

tensing and working in the

theatre. Journalism speakers

discussed broadcast media and

consumer safety. law

enforcement officials aided

students in business law

classes, and free enterprise

students heard speakers

discuss economics and unions.

Home ec students heard

lectures on foods and

clothings, as well as family

life. One highly anticipated

psychology speaker delivered

the same talk repeatedly,

thanks to the recording device.
