Spectators become
participants in individual
sports activities
In the changing role of
spectator to participant, many
of today' s youth look for
sporting activities in which the
individual effort is emphasized.
Gymnastics, jogging, tennis,
motorcross, among others vie
for students' time along with
the traditional outdoor activities
of hunting, skiing, swimming,
and fishing. In warm weather
a majority of this area's young
people can be found sunning
themselves along the levee,
circling Forsythe Park , riding at
the Bicentennial Motocross
track at Cheniere, or trying
the cool waters of the
Ouachita, with the
headquarters usually at lazarre
Point.
Gaining in popularity is the
sport of gymnastics, which
includes not only parallel bars
and balance beams but also
acrobatics. For those not able
to go to gymnastics centers,
dancing classes offer
instruction in acrobatics.
Now an art of the mind as
well as a knowledge in
self-defense, karate is an
increased and growing sport.
Senior Joseph Bryant has
earned a green belt in karate.
Joseph said, "It was
something to do for fun and
physical exercise."
42/lndividual Sports
More popular than ever
before as testified by the wide
range of wearing, of special
apparel and the flood of
how-to books, jogging is done
by many to help shape up or
stay in shape.
