four 1ssues
each semester
Pressures of deadlines,
misplaced stories, and only
one dependable IBM Selectric
created an aura of
pandemonium when the Rebel
Dispatch staff members met
fourth period.
Through the confusion, four
issues of the Rebel
Dispatch/inkling emerged in
the first semester. With the
loss of four staff members at
midterm, the news magazine
was temporarily suspended so
that the staff could
concentrate on news stories.
"Each story has to be
typed a minimum of three
times, and that is
time-consuming," said Mrs.
Hope Carroll, advisor, who
explained that the students
themselves justify the margins
manually instead of
electronically. "This means
each story must be typed in
desired column width before
being typed and justified on
the electric typewriter."
Proofreading and correcting
was done prior to pasteup.
Headlines were set at a local
printing company, and the
entire paper was sent
camera-ready to be printed.
"Most students don't realize
how many man hours are
required for each issue. Many
other schools simply send the
newspaper articles to a printer,
and he sets, corrects, lays
out, and pastes up the
paper," said Mrs. Carroll.
"Students here have a 'hands
on' experience in learning
newspaper production."
Editor during the first
semester was Sandra Sims,
who graduated at midterm.
Cindy Strahan was editor
during spring semester.
Business manager for his third
year was Mark Perkins. Kevin
Perkins and Roy Pearrow were
photographers, while Krista
Peters and Bill Golliher did
illustrations.
