Talented Students Find Honors
Many outstanding Semors were honored in
1978-79.
Several scholarshtps were available.
The Morehead, a full four -year scholarship
to UNC-Chapel Hill. required students to be
well -rounded. intelligent. serv1ce oriented,
and capable of leadership. El Chino Martin
was awarded this scholarship on the basis of
his outstanding traits. Based upon her
talent in music and her academic
achievements. Kelly Wells was awarded
both the Daniel Music Scholarship and the
Littlejohn Scholarship to Furman University.
Several students became finalists for other
prestigious scholarships. Carol Dashner was
a finalist for the Angier B. Duke Scholarship
to Duke University. and Celeste Griffin was
an alterna t e finalist for the Edward
Crosland Stuart Scholarship to Davidson
College.
The National Merit Scholarship Program
sponsored scholarshtps to students who
scored well on the PSAT and who
maintained a htgh score on the SAT. Jun
Saunders. Larry Chtsholm. Mtchael Wood.
and Andy Hooton were all fmallst s. El Chtno
Martin was a fmalist for the National
Achievement Scholarship Program for
Outstandmg Negro Students. Talented
LaGena Lookabill was award d a two–
thousand dollar scholarship to the college of
her chotce when she won the Mtss North
Carolina Junior Miss. The hard work and
dedication of all these students was well
rewarded.
