MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Habitat for Humanity was a new
addition to the play list at Franklin. Habitat
for Humanity is a non-profit organization
that gathers funds and supplies to build
housing for low-income families.
It
formed
at the start of the school year with the daunt–
ing task of raising $60,000.The considerable
funds were needed before any construction
could begin. Kelly Cramer, Habitat presi–
dent, hopes that construction will begin by
Spring of 2003. As the first chapter that
FranklinHighhas had, boardmembers faced
the task of hosting a membership drive as
well as several fundraising events. "Starting
from the ground up has been a challenge,"
Alex Nickle, junior, says, "but in the end
it
will be well worth it."
Students Taking A Right Stand, or
STARS, was a student based program that
was dedicated to helping people. However,
its focus was not community based as much
as it was peer oriented. Students joined to–
gether with those they trusted to talk about
their problems and share ways to withstand
the pressures of adolescence.
