Season's Victories Give J.V. Tearn Oustanding Finish
The junior varsity football team completed
a very successful season with a record of
six wins. three losses, and one tie. The
two-man coaching staff, consisting of head
coach Larry Lewis and coach Mike
Watkins, worked out effective practice
routines on both offensive and defensive
plays that proved successful in developing
a well-coordinated unit.
The defensive unit, better known as the
"Peppermint Stick", consisted of Forrest
Edge, John Ward, Andrew Bernstein, Larry
Simelton, Tom Westra, Ed Boyd. and Ricky
Summers. who only gave up an average of
one touchdown per game. These men were
also members of the offensive unit.
The first game was against Myers Park,
South's biggest rival. which ended up in a
tie. Mid-season play included three
consecutive wins which were Olympic,
East Mecklenburg, and West Charlotte.
These wins were followed by two losses to
West Mecklenburg and Garinger.
The last three games culminated a
rewarding season from the upset of the
previously undefeated Independence
Patriots by a score of twenty to six. In the
last game, the Sabres shut-out the
Mustangs by a score of twenty-one to zero.
These players learned the skills and gained
experience that is needed to help form the
future varsity team.
