Cheerleaders
Promote Spirit
The South Mecklenburg Varsity Cheer–
leaders promoted school spirit and unity by
supporting all major varsity athletic teams
during competition, and by performing at
pep rallies. The fourteen talented girls
were chosen by a panel of faculty members
during last spring's tryouts which were
open to all rising juniors and seniors.
Head Cheerleader Connie Bones and
Co-Head Mary Margaret Neilson led the
other girls during their practice every
school day, with help from Faculty
Advisors Mavis Thompson and Cheryl
Allen.
The Varsity Cheerleaders kept up their
reputation as an exciting and colorful
squad by incorporating gymnastics and
rythmic steps in a military style. Their
bright cheers and astounding pyramids
kept both the athletes and the spectators
on their toes.
